Spoon Theory

The other day I visited a college. A girl who suffered with a chronic illness told me about the spoon theory. It is possibly one of the best ways to explain what a day is like for people with POTS or any chronic illness.

A spoon represents an activity for the day this activity is as simple as getting dressed, eating breakfast, or walking down your dive way to the mailbox. So if we were all to have a collection of spoons for the day a normal person would have an almost unlimited number. On the other hand people with chronic illnesses have a limited number of spoons. Most people take their amount of "spoons" for granted. They can wake up and start their day without even thinking about it. Those of us with chronic illnesses have to assess our number of "spoons" every day, sometimes multiple times a day.

I hope this theory made it a little bit clearer on what it's like to have POTS.
